I would let Tao go hunt with Ram.
Tao and Ram learned to hunt together.

I think Graybeard feels sorry for Tao,thats why hes teaching Tao how to paint.I also think Tao will be a replacement, when Graybeard dies.
It tells me that Graybeard does care about other people.
